The Sales-Tax-Collected line is the trap — Etsy collects sales tax for US states that have marketplace facilitator laws and EU VAT under IOSS where applicable, and those amounts pass through your statement but aren't your revenue. Cost of sales for a handmade Etsy business runs differently from drop-ship or wholesale ecommerce. Materials are typically purchased in batches, used across multiple SKUs, and rarely tracked SKU-by-SKU. Where Etsy Accounting Catches Sellers Out
Offsite Ads opt-out timing — Etsy enrolls all sellers above $10k US into Offsite Ads automatically with a 12% commission on attributed sales. Sellers below that threshold can opt in or out. The 12% (or 15% for certain categories) is a meaningful margin hit and the attribution can be loose — a customer who saw your Etsy Ad on Facebook two weeks ago, came back via Etsy search, and bought might still trigger the Offsite Ads fee. Pattern site VAT and the Place of Supply rules — Etsy Pattern is technically a separate sales channel using Etsy's payment infrastructure. US customers fall under whatever sales tax MF rules apply. The Place of Supply analysis is the same as for Etsy main-marketplace sales but the data isolation often gets sloppy in the seller's books.
Materials cost capitalisation for high-value handmade items — a jewellery maker buying gold by the gram, or a leather-goods maker buying hides, has materials at a cost that should be capitalised into work-in-progress for the items not yet listed. Generalist accountants expense these on purchase, which destroys the gross-margin view. Specialist accountants build a materials-WIP line and roll it into completed-stock as items are listed.
Custom-order and made-to-order accounting — Etsy sellers handling commissioned work (made-to-order rather than from-stock) have a deposit-and-final-payment structure that needs proper revenue recognition. Cash received as a deposit isn't revenue until the work is delivered (or substantially complete under the FRS 102 / FRS 105 rules).
